FAP:O 1.21 – with Louis Helbig

Beautiful destruction

    This December, Louis Helbig, in conjunction with Rocky Mountain Books, releases Beautiful Destruction “one of the most ambitious, provocative and unique photography projects to be published in years.”
     
    The 300 page book contains 200+ stunning aerial photographs of the world’s largest industrial project complemented by a dynamic collection of essays by high profile personalities Elizabeth May, Rick George, Bill McKibben, Ezra Levant, Chief Allan Adam and ten others. Each photo’s name is translated into Cree, Denesuline and English.
     
    Earlier this year the project became – at $43,000 – the most successful Canadian crowd-sourced art or photography project ever.
     
    Louis Helbig showed an advance copy of the book and discussed the evolution of the Beautiful Destruction project from his first aerial photo foray in 2008, when the tar/oil sands were largely unknown to Canadians, to its present incarnation – an art photo book – that is the first intentional effort, of any sort, to bring together a wide range of viewpoints around an issue that today – in 2014 – dominates Canadian and American headlines.

  • Topic: Ralph Nevins presented “travels without my tante – around & about in France” a unilingual view of spending 10 months at photography in France – culture & odd bits of trivia from a totally anecdotal point of view …

FAP:O 1.19 – with Larry Weissmann

  • Speaker: Larry Weissmann
  • Topic: Larry Weissmann presented “…not close enough…”, One man’s quest to find the meaning of life through photography. As well as describing his own use of the medium as both a tool for self-expression (the aesthetic side), and as a means of working for social justice (documentary), the talk also gave an  overview of the photographic scene from the 1950’s through the 80’s. Beginning photography in his teens and taking it up as a full-time pursuit when he moved to Canada in 1967, Larry was responsible for starting the first university photography course in Canada (York University).  His work has been widely exhibited and is in collections both here and abroad, including the National Gallery’s CMCP collection.

FAP:O 1.18 – with Jamie Kronick

  • Topic: Jamie Kronick spoke on “Make The Work You Want To See”. No matter what the content, medium, or language, make the work you want to see. In a world where ‘everything has been done’, what’s left to do is that which you feel compelled to create.

Jamie’s show “The Songwriter” opens in early September 2014 in the Ottawa Art Gallery Annex in City Hall.

 

FAP:O 1.17 – representing transitory people

  • Topic: Jake Morrison asked for ideas on representing the ephemeral tourists in his upcoming show “Tourists – here today, gone tomorrow”. A lively discussion ensued about the idea of ephemeral people and their representation.

    “Tourists” was scheduled to open on August 22nd, 2014 but, due to facility maintenance, has been rescheduled for March 2015 in Atrium Gallery.

FAP:O 1.16 – with Olivia Johnston

  • Speaker: Olivia Johnston 
  • Topic: Olivia Johnston is an artist and curator working in Ottawa, currently completing an art history degree at Carleton University. Her talk examined the inspiration that can be derived from the art historical  canon for artists working in visual media. Johnston discussed the value of engaging with the work of past artists in creating new work, and how visual artists of all kinds, including photo-based artists, can benefit from the study of art history, both aesthetically and academically. Johnston examined the work of artists throughout the canon and discussed her own work within this context as well.

FAP:O 1.15 – with Raymond Aubin

  • Topic: Digital photography made possible the creation of very wide panoramas. In this presentation, Raymond Aubin will talk about his corpus of photographic panoramas of public places. He will present his aesthetic approach, his technique, and the general conditions under which he took these pictures.

FAP:O 1.14 – with the Studio Zone V Collective

  • Speaker: Glen Bloodworth and Richard Perron 
  • Topic: They elaborated on the key role and influence of the collective in their artistic learning and evolution.  They also briefly talked about their individual work and the collective exhibition that will be presented at the city of Ottawa Atrium gallery starting March 21 and going on until April 21.
